Dave McKean (born 29 December 1963 in Maidenhead, England) is an illustrator, photographer, comic book artist, filmmaker and musician. His function incorporates drawing, painting, photography, collage, found objects, digital art and sculpture.

When an stillborn hike to New York in 1986 during which he failed to find function as a comedian creative person, McKean met writer Neil Gaiman and the pair collaborated in the short graphic novel of disturbing childhood memories, Violent Cases, published in 1987. This was followed within 1988 by a Black Orchid miniseries (again by having Gaiman) & Hellblazer covers for DC Comics. Beginning within 1989 he produced the covers for Gaiman's celebrated series The Sandman, all its gathered editions & several of its spin-by-product, & a Batman graphic novel, Arkham Asylum, with writer Grant Morrison (1989). His function when you took this time was typically in comparison that of Bill Sienkiewicz.

Between 1990 and 1996 McKean wrote and drew a tenner issues of Cages, an ambitious graphic novel all about creative person & creative thinking, illustrated inside the stripped-stripped pen & ink style influenced by José Muñoz and Lorenzo Mattotti. Cages wwhen promulgated as lone volume by Kitchen Sink Press in 1998, and around the just released edition by NBM Publishing in 2002.

Farther collaborations by having Gaiman produced a graphic novels Signal to Noise in 1992 (previously serialised in The Face magazine), about the anxious film maker & his supposititious survive film, & Mr Punch, which explored similar themes when Violent Instances through the mental imagery of the Punch and Judy show.

Outside of comedian, McKean has produced CD covers for Tori Amos, Alice Cooper, Counting Crows, Michael Nyman, Toad the Wet Sprocket, Skinny Puppy, Download, Front Line Assembly, Bill Bruford and many others; book covers for Jonathan Carroll, Iain Sinclair and others, illustrations for The New Yorker, & advertising and commercial art. He has published 2 books of photography, The Microscopic Book of Black & White Lies (1995) and Guide: Doubleclick (1998), and the book of short comedian, Pictures that Tick (2001). Inside 2005, he designed a poster for the 32nd Telluride Film Festival.

Supplementary recently McKean has collaborated sustaining Neil Gaiman in 2 youngsters's picture books, The Day I personally Swapped the Pop for Both Carassius auratus (1998) and A Wolves in the Bulwarks (2003), and illustrated Gaiman's babies's novel Coraline (2002), when well as S F Said's Varjak Paw (2003).

MirrorMask, McKean's first feature film as director and ocular designer, premiered at a Sundance Film Festival in January 2005. A screenplay was written by Neil Gaiman from the scenario by McKean. The youngsters's fantasy which combines survive action & digital animation, Mirrormask was by Jim Henson Studios and stars Stephanie Leonidas, Gina McKee, Rob Brydon, Stephen Fry and Andy Hamilton.

McKean is too an accomplished jazz pianist, and founded a record label Feral Records with saxophonist Ian Ballamy.
